Our Story : From One Man's Vision to a Continent's Welcome

Every great journey begins with a single step. For Gumbo Mbelwa Mhandeni, that step was taken not on a well-trodden path, but on the red dust roads of rural Tanzania, where as a young boy he walked alongside his grandfather, a traditional hunter and keeper of stories.

Those walks were not mere walks. They were lessons in listening. In reading the land. In understanding that Africa does not reveal itself to the hurried or the entitled. Africa reveals itself to the patient, the respectful, the curious.

That childhood formed the foundation of Experiential Travel Africa.

Today, Gumbo leads a company that has reimagined what luxury African travel can be not as a series of checklists or fi ve-star properties, but as a transformation. A homecoming. A conversation between traveler and continent that continues long after the journey ends.

Gumbo Mbelwa Mhandeni was not born into the travel industry. He was born into the land itself.

Raised between the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro and the City of Arusha.Gumbo learned early that the greatest luxury is not a private butler or a heated pool though we provide those too. The greatest luxury is access: to a gorilla family that has never known harm from humans. To a Maasai elder who agrees to share stories that have never been written down. To a sunset viewed from a dhow that has sailed these waters for generations.

Before founding Experiential Travel Africa, Gumbo spent over a decade working with some of the world's most respected corporations in conservation science and leadership , research , luxury travel and tourism learning the mechanics of logistics, the art of leading expeditions, and the science of client care. But something was missing.

The stories being told about Africa were not always the stories Africa wanted to tell. Too often, the narrative was crafted for Western audiences, centered Western heroes, and erased the Black professionals, the trackers, the drivers, the camp managers, the conservation rangers who made the magic possible.

Gumbo founded Experiential Travel Africa to change that narrative.

Not to exclude. To include. To center. To honor.

Today, Gumbo personally designs many of our most complex itineraries, leads select group departures, and maintains direct relationships with community elders, lodge owners, and conservation partners across Africa and beyond.

We believe that wonder should have no boundaries. Our vehicles are adapted. Our partner accommodations include accessible rooms. Our gorilla trekking experiences offer sedan chairs for limited-mobility guests. And for those who cannot trek at all, we design days as meaningful as any trekker's.

You will never be asked to pay before reviewing a full contract, including cancellation schedules, refund policies, and force majeure provisions. We believe that trust is earned through clarity.

We are not a company that extracts value from Africa and sends it overseas. Our supply chain prioritizes fair-wage guides / expedition leaders and community-run enterprises.
